![]() ![]() ![]() It was an incredible game when it came out, and one of the most influential games of all time. It is a 3D engine that really only allows for 2.5D gameplay. Every elevator in Doom could just be a two doors of an airlock. ![]() They are a fundamentally different engines, in that one truly allows for fully 3D gameplay, and the other has 3D visuals with mostly 2D gameplay. Mathematically, it is not a 3D engine.ĭuke has bridges and it’s not really that different from Doom in terms of the capabilities of the underlying engine. There appear to be three dimensions, but there are really only two linearly independent dimensions in terms of gameplay mechanics. You can't to aim up or down in Doom, because there isn't really an up or down. The stairs and elevators affect how the game is played. In Doom, you have things like elevators and stairs. It is definitely a question worth debating, and I think it comes down to different perspectives (pun intended).ģD just means you have x,y,z coordinates. GZDoom titles that do a good job at not feeling like Doom:Įdit: I'm going to walk some of this back. Thankfully, the latter is being worked on! For starters, the forced GPL-license can be a pain in the ass, along with questionable code and some optimization issues. GZDoom is easy to use and provides plenty of tools but you have to be aware of some of it's downsides. You are (mostly) in full control over the entire thing.Įngines these days aren't about whether they are good or bad, it's about the tools and the accessibility. The tools are powerful, the community is active, the documentation is great, and the engine being entirely open-source also adds to the power of it. In its current state, GZDoom is capable of much more than a "2.5D shooter" and it grew into something that is no longer just a Source Port to run Doom/Heretic etc on, which is what I feel like is the general assumption from this thread. It's a great platform for shooters, including shooters that feel nothing like Doom (e.g Disdain or Total Chaos), and some developers are even making Megaman-esque sidescrollers games on it these days ( ), which just goes to show how diverse it is. Like any engine, this largely depends on what you are trying to achieve. Having experience with a variety of engines, I have to disagree with this and most other comments seen in this thread. ![]()
